I have no doubt the Noteplan team will, at some point, eliminate even that need. The ONLY thing I do outside of it is use Basecamp for projects and calendars where I MUST collaborate with my team. I manage two side businesses with this app. I manage a busy medical clinic with this app. There is nothing that needs done in my world that cannot be done PERFECTLY by this app.

Because this system does it all, elegantly, in the most portable and deceptively simple way. Every app, every approach has its strengths and weaknesses, I love them all in some ways.Īnd I won't be looking anymore. I have bounced back and forth between Omnifocus, Things, Wunderlist, Basecamp, Todoist, Nirvana, native Apple apps, bullet journals, dry erase calendars, custom text based systems - you name it. But I'm taking the time to write this review for an app that, for me, represents the best in class across multiple categories. I am one of those jerks that typically only leaves reviews when I am angry about something. It is a thoughtfully-designed, eminently Mac-like app that gets all sorts of little details right, and I would recommend it to anyone searching for a way to tame their workflow and create a personal library of important info. These two qualities, however, barely scratch the surface of NotePlan's brilliance and depth. You're not locked in to a single service with all of your precious data held captive inside an interface or protocol that you can't access. And, if you ever wanted, you can take everything you've generated with NotePlan and use it elsewhere. You can go look at the TXT files, move them around, load them into other services if needed. Second - and as an extension of the above point - NotePlan gives you ready access to all of your files right in the Finder. But text is the hardiest and most durable form of digital communication we have, and that means the time you invest in NotePlan will be more likely to survive into the future. While some might see this as a limitation, that's fine. No fancy tables, databases, multiple content types.

What NotePlan gets right - in my opinion - is two major things:įirst, it focuses on text. Tools like Notion, Obsidian, Roam and others abound. "Tools for thought" is a nascent category. But once I created my first few notes, played with the tagging and wiklinking and ported in a handful of notes I had cobbled together elsewhere, a lightbulb went off. What's surprising is that I had no idea what NotePlan was like going in. It's rare that I take the time to write a review, but NotePlan demands an exception.
